Is Human fiber supplements (Metamucil) Safe for Cats?
Why it’s conditional
Plain psyllium is non-toxic to cats and has occasionally been used under veterinary direction for hairball and constipation management. The risks are physical rather than chemical: gelled or dry fiber can clump in a cat’s narrow digestive tract and cause obstruction. Flavored products may contain sweeteners, so labels should be checked.
How to keep your pet safe
Never mix human fiber supplements into cat food without veterinary direction — feline constipation and hairballs have causes that need diagnosis. If a vet recommends fiber, follow the product and mixing instructions exactly. Store canisters where a curious cat cannot dig in and taste the powder.
Warning signs to watch for
Drooling, gagging, vomiting, constipation or straining in the litter box, reduced appetite, belly discomfort; dry powder ingestion: choking or signs of obstruction over a day or more.
When to call the vet
Call your veterinarian or a pet poison hotline if your cat ate dry powder or a flavored product, or is straining without producing stool. Obstruction signs such as repeated vomiting and no stools need urgent in-person care.
Common questions
My cat licked dry Metamucil powder — should I worry?
A small lick may cause drooling or gagging, but dry psyllium swells with moisture and can clump in the gut. Call your veterinarian or a pet poison hotline for guidance, and watch for vomiting or litter-box straining.
Can Metamucil help my constipated cat?
Do not self-dose it — constipation in cats can signal serious underlying disease, and fiber must be dosed and mixed correctly. Ask your veterinarian for a diagnosis and a safe plan.
