Is Frankincense Oil Safe for Dogs?
Why it’s conditional
Frankincense oil is low in the phenols and ketones that drive severe oil poisonings, and adverse reports in dogs are uncommon. It is still a concentrate, so swallowing or heavy skin contact can cause drooling and vomiting. Small and senior dogs have less tolerance.
How to keep your pet safe
Diffuse a drop or two in a large aired-out room, and stop if the dog sneezes or leaves the room. Never apply neat oil — heavily diluted pet products are the safer form. Keep the bottle capped and out of reach.
Warning signs to watch for
Drooling, vomiting, mild lethargy, sneezing or coughing near strong diffusion, skin redness if undiluted
When to call the vet
A small lick of diluted product usually only needs watching. Call your veterinarian if neat oil was swallowed or symptoms linger.
Common questions
Can frankincense help my dog’s arthritis?
There is little solid evidence, and the oil itself is not a treatment. Ask your vet about proven joint supplements instead.
Is frankincense safe for puppies?
Be more cautious with puppies — their small size and immature liver function lower the margin. Skip diffusion around them.
