Is Cetirizine (Zyrtec) Safe for Dogs?
Why it’s conditional
Cetirizine has low toxicity, and single extra tablets typically cause only drowsiness or mild stomach upset in dogs. Some dogs react oppositely and become agitated. Combination allergy products with decongestants are the real danger, and dissolving tablets or liquid can contain sweeteners or xylitol that dogs must not have.
How to keep your pet safe
Use only plain cetirizine if your vet approves, and check labels for added decongestants and sweeteners. Store the bottle where a dog cannot chew through it.
Warning signs to watch for
Drowsiness or, in some dogs, agitation; drooling, vomiting, diarrhea; with decongestant combination products: racing heart, tremors, and hyperactivity.
When to call the vet
Call your vet or a pet poison hotline after any ingestion more than a single approved dose, and always if a combination product was involved.
Common questions
My dog ate a couple of my Zyrtec tablets — should I worry?
Plain cetirizine at that level usually means mild sleepiness in a dog, but confirm the label has no decongestant. Call your vet or a poison hotline with the product name to be sure.
Can Zyrtec help my dog’s itchy skin?
Vets do sometimes recommend it, and it helps some dogs, but self-dosing is the wrong way to find out. Itching has causes antihistamines cannot touch, so get a diagnosis first.
My dog ate Zyrtec-D — is that different?
Yes, urgently different. The decongestant in it can poison a dog with tremors and a racing heart. Contact a vet or pet poison hotline immediately.
